From The Desk Of: Jane Herman
Nov 16, 2015
You’ve probably heard of avid fashion writer Jane Herman. Her voice has graced the pages of publications like Vogue, Elle, and Glamour. Currently working with Vogue magazine, Jane sat down to give us a glimpse of her life—from her everyday essentials to her insights and inspirations.
Describe your personal aesthetic in three words:
"Efficient, clean, blue"
What career moves and/or aspirations brought you to your current role?
"Recklessly quitting a job that I didn't love without having another job lined up left me little choice but to make a new job for myself."
What’s on your desk?
"My MacBook pro (15"), notebooks from Muji, Smythson Soho diary (I write all of my appointments and calendar events down on paper in this diary, still), pens (Uniball micro .5, black ink), a pile of jeans (new pairs that need trying on or reviewing); a cup full of paperclips shaped like farm animals, lookbooks, graph paper (for to-do lists), my cat (if I'm there, he's usually there, too)."
What’s in your bag/always on your person?
"In my bag: Fresh Sugar lip balm, Tata Harper Aromatic Irritability Treatment (which sounds more serious than it is! It's basically a soothing-smelling body oil), Uka nail oil, Clare V pouches in various sizes, my Smythson diary, candy, computer, iPhone, Peter Thomas Roth Instant Mineral SPF 45, keys."
I don't show up at a meeting without: "A pair of great jeans on."
What is the best professional lesson you’ve ever learned? "Timing is everything."
Branding is "storytelling."
What's the inspiration behind your latest print project?
"With Paper Chase, Jean Stories made notecards featuring illustrations of our favorite denim pieces – a jean jacket, a mom jean, a pair of overalls, a denim shirt, or a skinny jean. Just as your jeans say a lot about you, so does your stationery! The idea was to combine these two very personal things."
What’s the life philosophy you live by?
"You get what you need. Also, slow and steady wins the race."
What do you love about what your company brings to its clients?
"I love that we help people find new favorite pairs of jeans. A good pair of jeans can change your life."
What is your favorite aspect of the job you do?
"No day is ever the same as the one before it."
Fill in the blanks, Jane.
I'd pay good money for: "vintage denim" / Wouldn't take even if free: "athleisure"
I'd love to write to "Joan Didion" / I would love to get a letter from "Thoreau"
I'd try "a flying trapeze" once / No, thanks to "sky diving"
I'm a true believer in"change" / Major skeptic about "perfection"
Share an insight on your life or life in general that you’ve discovered:
"It isn't how it looks on Instagram."
How does one tap into their creative side?
"By letting the brain breathe. Get quiet. Take breaks. Be bored for a minute. That's when the good ideas come."
